Examples of questions
Q: Is my house electrically safe
A.: In all probability yes, if your house has recently (within 10 years) been built and/or has been tested with a certificate issued the it will more than likely be fine. If for any reason you are unsure of something or not happy with a fitting or wiring then contact qualified electrician to arrange a visit to inspect what you may believe to be faulty or dangerous.
Q: What size fuse/breaker do i need
A: A lot depends on the loading your putting on the circuit, the size of cabling the circuit uses and the manner in witch its wired. For more detialed information seek the advice of a qualified electrician who can familiarise himself with your specific installation.
Q: Can i have outside lights/power
A: Yes, in any ground floor dwelling it would be possible to wire an outside power point to pick up lighting for gardens or security etc. This can be done by putting in a new circuit from a consumer unit, or utilising a current socket or power point near to where the outside point would be positioned.
Q: What colour is live/neutral/earth
A: In older installtions that are single phase, live is generally red , neutral is black and earth is green/yellow. There are always exceptional cicumstances though and these colours are a generalisation, e.g in lighting circuits, black is commonly used as a switch live so will be live and not neutral. In newer installtions, live is generally brown and neutral is blue with earth being green/yellow. If for any reason your not sure, contact a qualified electrician to vist and confirm this, do not touch any electrical wiring if you are not qualified.
